Wiltshire Police Authority (WPA) is responsible for ensuring that the community in Wiltshire, including the Borough of Swindon, receive an efficient and effective policing service. WPA  comprises:

  • 6 councillors appointed by Wiltshire Council
  • 3 councillors appointed by Swindon Borough Council
  • 8 independent members (one of whom is a magistrate)

WPA holds the Chief Constable to account for delivering the policing service. We consult local people about their policing needs and priorities and use this information to determine objectives and set challenging targets for the Force.

WPA scrutinises performance rigorously and reports to the community on how the Force is doing.

WPA decides the annual police budget and determines how much money should be raised through the council tax.

WPA appoints the chief officers, monitors complaints, plans ahead for the coming three years.
