As from December 2006, the Authority has a duty placed upon on it to:
-
Promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and non disabled people;
-
Eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the DDA;
-
Eliminate harassment of disabled people that is related to their disability;
-
Promote positive attitudes towards disabled people;
-
Encourage participation by disabled people in public life; and
-
Take steps to meet disabled people’s needs, even if this requires more favourable treatment
In order to meet this duty the Authority is required to publish a Disability Equality Scheme and an Action Plan. These two documents along with the appendices are attached below.
Both the Scheme and the Action Plan are considered to be ‘living’ documents. This means that they can be updated at any time to properly reflect changing circumstances.
