An Audit of Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour and Drug Misuse in Wiltshire & Swindon - October 2004

Welcome to the findings of the audit of crime, anti-social behaviour and drugs in Wiltshire and Swindon which were published in October 2004 by the community safety and drugs partnerships in Swindon, North Wiltshire, West Wiltshire, South Wiltshire and Kennet. The audit report paints a picture of the problems of crime and drug misuse affecting people living or working in Wiltshire and Swindon or visiting the area, and provides the information which will help to decide what should be the main priorities for tackling these problems between April 2005 and March 2008.

If you would like to comment on any aspect of the Audit, please send your comments to the following email address: Police.Authority@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk. All feedback will be considered by the partnership members before the Strategy is finalised.

Opportunities will be provided between October 2004 and March 2005 for you to comment on the findings of the audit, and on the suggested priorities set out on pages 21-30.

Please note that, after the report was published, a data error was discovered which overstated the numbers of cases of theft and handling in 2002/3 which were used for the maps and the ward-based analysis of theft and handling cases. The error was carried through, at a much lower level, into the maps and ward-based analysis of total crime, but had no effect on the analysis of other crime types. The error inflated the number of theft and handling cases by 12% and the number of 'total crimes' by 3%. It is thought unlikely that the error had any significant impact on the ranking order of wards in respect of total crime or of theft and handling offences.

This error did not affect the crime figures for 2002/3 and 2003/4 which have been used in chapter 2 to contrast crime rates between Wiltshire's four districts and the borough of Swindon.
